Sentry by NexusDX Sentry by NexusDX
Another late drawing for the DSC. Like how this image came out. I hate the character, though. I really do. Him dying was great.

45 minutes. Sharpie marker over 2B mechanical pencil on sketch paper.

I have to ask, why? What about him appeals to you?

He is the only believable superpowered character with godlike powers.
He is how Superman would be in our world.

You can't be a big blue boyscout. Being perfect and standing in for truth and justice in this world. You can try to make the best out of it, but in the end of the day - humans will remain an evil species. A specials with a lot of flaws and Sentry was a human.

He had godlike powers, but he was still only a man. A man who had a phobia which limited him very often in his powers, but he always tried to do the best. He was flying from disaster to disaster to save as many people as possible, while being led by a programm who was calculating who is allowed to live and who isn't, since ... how could Sentry, an ordinary man with too much power make such decisions? No one can do that.

He was able to hear a butterflies sneeze in Africa, while being in America. Imagine what else he was able to hear.
All the death screams all over the world as soon as he started listening. How could a human being handle so much negativity? It's nearly impossible. You would have to shut down, the try to become numb and cold in order to continue trying to save as many of them as possible, but ... unfortunately you would build a dark place in the depths of your mind. You would create a Void.
The Void that would break out and maybe try to silence all the voices on the planet, since then - no one would be there and you would finally be able to live in piece.

Hmm... never looked at it that way. Let my hatred of the character get in the way. Still don't like him, but I hate him a tad less.

I think the character had potential, but they kind-of wasted it by making him less of a man working through mental and emotional distress and more of an incompetent who would fly off into space crying just from someone calling him a stupid-head.

Good drawing, though. :)

I just didn't like him in general, whether he was a mental case or just a shithead. His death made me smile. His funeral made me groan.

And thanks.

Oh, his funeral issue was the WORST, I agree. Thankfully, it seems like everyone ignored it shortly afterward.

And I'm from the "there's no such thing as a bad character" school, so I think that has a bit to it. I mean, the idea of a Superman analogue who has problems dealing with and accepting his powers and humanity, who's power comes at a price, who tries to make it so that the world forgets him...I think that could be a fascinating character with the right writer. 'Course, that could just be me.

I didn't like the whole idea of people forgetting, either. I mean, I agree, there is potential there if they tackled it like he's a super freak who struggles with his powers, how to use them, etc. Could prove interesting. But what we got was a character I wanted to take a baseball bat to.

The only issue I really found him interesting in was where he confronted Moon Knight in Vengeance of the Moon Knight series. That was a good take, something that could have been focused on in his own series better.

Shame they had to go give it to Bendis. And now they're doing it to the Guardians of the Galaxy, too. DAMN YOU, MARVEL!

Although, to be fair to Bendis, Moon Knight's Shadowland mini did him no justice.
